Yes, We Are Behind on “Single Slices”

As those of you who are still waiting to hear from us already know, yes, we are behind in our reading for Single Slices.  This is partly because we received SO many interesting stories, and they all demand to be read in great detail; but also, because a few of our team members have been diverted to work on preparing for our newest release, which we will be selling at the World Horror Convention in Atlanta the second weekend of May (major announcement coming any day now).

So, if you submitted to Single Slices, rest assured that some of us are still working our way through the submissions stack.  You will hear from us, yea or nay, eventually.

As a consolation, here is a sneak peek at our new Single Slices logo!

You CAN keep the world safe AND read books

Someone once said that fighting in a war means enduring long hours of boredom, punctuated by moments of sheer terror.  For the American soldier, that raises a question: what can he or she do to get through the boring parts?  We humbly offer a suggestion:  read books!

Farolight Publishing is proud to support Authors Supporting Our Troops (ASOT)a small but dynamic operation that puts author-donated and/or author-signed print books into the hands of our troops (all military branches) serving in remote areas (Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait), where the days can be long and diversions are difficult to find. Books are in such short supply that a single book can make the rounds throughout the entire base, some soldiers reading it two or three times. ASOT sends boxes of books to individual soldiers to share with their comrades, offering a variety of genres and hours of entertainment.

If you’re an author, consider sending ASOT copies of your books; if you’re a reader, please consider supporting the cause by helping defray shipping costs, etc.  You can read about the program in more detail here.

So, here’s to keeping our troops safe from boredom as they keep the world safe from terror.  (We won’t comment on the irony that we sent them a bunch of Cutting Block horror anthologies, which can inspire terror of a completely different sort.)

“Single Slices” Update

We thought we’d give folks a brief status update on our Single Slices project.

Our reading staff have been busy beavers lately, working our way through the large number of Slices submissions that we’ve received.  It’s slow work, because the stories are longer than the usual short story, and because we want to give every submission a fair chance to impress us.

And we’ve been seeing a lot of interesting material!  Not all of it will make the grade, of course, but we are heartened that so many people are pouring so much of themselves into this wonderful medium called horror fiction.  We at Cutting Block Books are proud to be part of a broader effort to revitalize the genre for the next generation of readers.

As for the status of submissions, we feel pretty confident that the first wave of acceptance/rejection emails will go out within the next week.  Yay!

Please note: Cutting Block has always tried to hew to the highest of editorial standards, and we have a distinct editorial vision, too; therefore, whenever we put out a call for general submissions we always have more rejections than acceptances.  If you get a rejection, do not despair!  It does not necessarily mean that your work is poor — it could easily mean that your story didn’t fit into our editors’ vision for this particular series.  Keep honing your craft, and submit again next time!

If you do not hear from us in this first wave of emails, please be patient.  We are still evaluating your story.  We will post updates in this space from time to time, as we progress through the reading effort.

Keep writing, and best of luck to all of you!
