Farolight Publishing is dedicated to publishing the best in artistic, well-crafted, and commercially viable books and e-books. We believe in the primacy of story — that a good book always starts with a good story — and that our readers deserve nothing less than consistently excellent literary entertainment.
In broad terms, we like characters that are engaging, situations that are compelling, plots that feel fresh, stories that sizzle with authenticity and resonate with the deepest longings of the human spirit. Those are the things, in our opinion, that form the foundation of a good story and a good book, regardless of genre. Those are the ideals we pursue.
Farolight began publishing operations in mid-2014, after its parent company, Farolight Entertainment, LLC, bought the assets of a small press publisher called Cutting Block Press. The original Cutting Block specialized in high-quality horror anthologies, several of which — including Horror Library Volume 3, Tattered Souls Volume 2, Horror Library Volume 4, and Horror Library Volume 5 — were nominated for Bram Stoker Awards®.
Farolight will continue the tradition of horror excellence with the release of several new Cutting Block titles every year, under a new imprint name, Cutting Block Books. These new titles will include paper and e-book novels and anthologies, as well as e-book singles.
In the near future, Farolight plans to branch out into other genres, under other imprint names. In all cases, we will not compromise our exceptional standards.
KEY EDITORIAL STAFF
Our commitment to superlative storytelling is reflected in the experience and accomplishments of our editorial staff:
Patrick Beltran — Owner/Publisher/Editor. Patrick was Associate Editor for two Bram Stoker Award nominated anthologies: Tattered Souls 2 and Horror Library Volume 5. He also served in various editorial roles for other titles from the original Cutting Block Press. He is an Associate Member of the Horror Writer’s Association, and an experienced screenwriter, journalist and editor.
Patrick has been on both sides of the writer-editor dynamic, so he is a thorough, yet “writer-friendly” editor. His literary interests vary widely, from horror to science fiction, to mysteries, thrillers and dramas.
Frank J. Hutton — Acquisitions Editor. Frank served as Editor-in Chief on four anthologies published by Cutting Block Press, including the Bram Stoker Award nominated Tattered Souls 2.
A longtime photographer of abandoned places, essayist on cultural narrative and writer of strange fictions, Frank brings a lifetime of experience in collaborative creative effort to bear when working with authors. He’s particularly interested in reviving the horror genre’s former bellwether literary status so to better suit an inherently provocative 21st Century global culture.
Eric J. Guignard — Series Editor, Horror Library. Eric is a writer and editor of dark and speculative fiction, operating from the shadowy outskirts of Los Angeles. He’s won the Bram Stoker Award, been a finalist for the International Thriller Writers Award, and been a multi-nominee of the Pushcart Prize.
Outside the glamorous and jet-setting world of indie fiction, Eric’s a technical writer and college professor, and he stumbles home each day to a wife, children, cats, and a terrarium filled with mischievous beetles.
Boyd E. Harris — Editorial Consultant. Boyd E. Harris was the owner of the original Cutting Block Press. During his tenure, Volumes 3, 4, and 5 of the +Horror Library+ series were nominated for Bram Stoker Awards® for best anthology, as was Tattered Souls 2.
Boyd has the exclusive distinction to be a Black Quill Award winning editor in two mediums, one for Dark Recesses Press magazine, and one for Horror Library Volume 4. His work as an editor has helped authors get stories optioned for films, and connected others to opportunities with larger publishers. Boyd believes there should be balance between storyline and structure, and emphasizes the value of challenging a reader’s imagination while not allowing a read to become tiresome.
Ed Becker — VP, Editorial Operations. Ed has had a long and storied career in business, and possesses a wide entrepreneurial streak. He spent years running his own consulting business, with Oracle Corporation as a major client, and many additional years at other companies, where at different times he has served as Business Analyst, Manager, and eventually Director of Business Analysis at a prominent Washington DC area sales and distribution company. In his spare time, Ed dabbles in painting, writing, and the culinary arts.
